EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Greener than ever, MSU Federal Credit Union is pleased to be recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council for achieving LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification as a gold building.
LEED recognizes construction that embodies sustainable environmental design. Evaluation includes site development, water conservation, efficiency in heating and cooling, low VOC material selection, recycled and recyclable materials, healthy lifestyle and indoor air quality. Construction projects that apply for certification are tested by the building council and must meet rigorous standards.
Recognizing the concerns of members and the local community, Pat McPharlin, president/CEO of MSUFCU, worked to make the new credit union headquarters a building that members would be proud of.
"Our buildings belong to our membership and our membership is greatly concerned with our environment," he said. "Building green ensures that we are good citizens by protecting the water table from water runoff; protecting the outdoor atmosphere by reducing the heat effect so often the result of a large building; protecting employees and members from toxic materials and toxic air; recycling materials left from the building as well as day-to-day living; and overall reducing our environmental and carbon footprint.
"Having this designation is important to us; it confirms that we are doing the right thing."
MSUFCU is celebrating its achievement with a "So Green We're Gold" campaign. Members can earn higher dividends with gold certificates and benefit with a lower loan rate given to members selecting fuel-efficient vehicles.
