Michigan State University Libraries will show the film “Micky B,” a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and host a discussion following the film from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 30, and "Haeundae," South Korea's first-ever disaster film, at 7 p.m. Oct. 5.
"Micky B," directed by Tom Magill, is a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s classic tale of betrayal, violence and the pursuit of power – but in the film, the characters are behind bars. The film was shot entirely in Northern Ireland’s Maghaberry Prison, with actors and crew drawn from the inmate population and prison staff.
The film is part of the Library Film Series. The event will take place in the N. Conference Room (W449) of the Main Library.
The discussion will be led by Sandra Logan of the MSU Department of English. The event is in coordination with the Early Modern Studies Group.
MSU Libraries also will show South Korea’s first-ever disaster film “Haeundae” at 7 p.m. Oct. 5.
Directed by Yoon Je-jyun, the film is in the epic tradition of Twister, Supervolcano and The Day the Earth Caught Fire. In this story, a tidal wave hits the famous beach resort at Haeundae, bringing tragedy, bravery and amazing special effects.
The film is part of the Library Film Series and will be shown in the N. Conference Room (W449) of the Main Library.
It will be presented by Mina Shin from the Department of Linguistics and Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages. The Asian Studies Center is also co-sponsoring the event.
