MSU Community Music School-Detroit to offer beginner guitar class

DETROIT -- Michigan State University's Community Music School-Detroit will debut a beginner guitar class on April 14.

Taught by local guitarist and composer Pedro Fernandez, the eight-week class will take place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the Cultural Center on Woodward Avenue, just south of Mack.

A composition and music theory student at Wayne State University, Fernandez composes and performs instrumental music for the WSU Dance Department and he is the founder of the New Music Collective, a small group dedicated to performing and promoting contemporary chamber music. He has a concentration in jazz and classical styles on guitar.

"My approach to teaching beginner guitar," Fernandez said, "is to focus on techniques that are immediately rewarding for the student. We start by listening to some great music and then begin with versatile and melodic chords."

Participants can register for the class online at www.cms.msu.edu or by calling (313) 578-9716.

CMS-Detroit offers music education opportunities for babies, retirees and everyone in between.  Programs include jazz and music composition classes for teens, early childhood music classes (for infants through age 5) and music therapy clinical services.

Additionally, as part of the nationally renowned New Horizons Band program, MSU has launched two community bands for adults: one for beginners, with no prior experience necessary, and one for intermediate/advanced players.

Tuition assistance is available for students of all ages. For information about music classes and music therapy opportunities at CMS-Detroit call (313) 578-9716 or visit www.cms.msu.edu. The school also has a Facebook page: "CMS-Detroit."
