MSU’s Lacy honored by AEJMC

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State University journalism professor Steve Lacy will receive the 2010 Paul J. Deutschmann Award for Excellence in Research.

The award will be given at the 2010 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication annual conference in Denver on Friday, Aug. 6. The award is named in honor of Paul J. Deutschmann, who was a pioneering faculty member in the MSU College of Communication Arts & Sciences during its formative years.

Lacy also is the associate dean for graduate studies in MSU’s College of Communication Arts and Sciences. He has written or co-written more than 85 refereed journal articles, more than 50 refereed conference papers, 10 book chapters and four books. He has co-edited two other books and written numerous articles, and is the former co-editor of the Journal of Media Economics.

Lacy served as director of the MSU School of Journalism from 1998 to 2003 and is a former president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

He received his undergraduate degree in economics (1971) from the University of Illinois at Urbana, his master’s degree in journalism (1979) from Texas A&M University at Commerce, and his Ph.D. in journalism (1986) from the University of Texas at Austin.

The Deutschmann award was created in the late 1960s to a honor journalism and mass communication faculty member who has an outstanding record of achievement in journalism and mass communication research. It has become one of the highest honors that AEJMC can bestow on a member. Deutschmann was appointed associate professor in the College of Communication Arts & Sciences in 1955, when the college was established. He passed away on May 3, 1963.
