EAST LANSING, Mich. — For the first time in its history, the MSU Breslin Cancer Center received a 10-Star Community Investor Award from the American Cancer Society's Great Lakes Division.
The American Cancer Society honors community health providers that are active in fighting cancer through its Workplace Solutions Program, a collection of free health, wellness and employee engagement services. MSU Breslin Cancer Center received the honor Feb. 22.
"It's an honor to receive the award as it reflects our dedication to caring for cancer patients and families, as well as our commitment to the Greater Lansing community," said Martha Trout, practice manager of the Breslin Cancer Center.
Hospitals and organizations must participate in American Cancer Society initiatives to earn recognition as a community investor. The cancer center invests in the mid-Michigan community through several programs and services:
- Being an active member in the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Network
- Sponsoring programs such as Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Community Champion and Coaches vs. Cancer
- Participation in the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control program
- Celebrating cancer survivors
- Referrals to the Road to Recovery program
- Tobacco prevention and cessation programs
- Quality of Life programs, including Look Good...Feel Better and I Can Cope
- Providing low cost or no cost cancer screenings
"In order for MSU Breslin Cancer Center to receive these awards, all members of the team - providers, nurses, social workers, ancillary staff and volunteers - must be involved and engaged with patients and ACS," Trout said. "Participating in ACS programs and being a site for one of the local cancer resource centers allows Breslin to offer a variety of valuable programs to the community."
