Decoy Carving Class at Kellogg Bird Sanctuary

Augusta, MI -- The Michigan State University Kellogg Bird Sanctuary will host a decoy carving class Jan. 29-31 with master decoy carver Willy McDonald.

Students will create a true hunting decoy from cork and basswood. The class covers all aspects of creating a hunting decoy, including carving, texturing, painting, sealing, keel construction and weighting.

Hand or power carving tools are welcome in class. Students may choose the carving method of their choice. (Students are to provide all tools and paint for their project.)

This class is designed and taught with the beginning student in mind but experienced carvers wishing to reinforce or brush up their technique are welcome.

Instructor Willy McDonald is an accomplished carver with three Best of Show wins at the Ohio Decoy Show's Shootin' Stool Contest, Gulf South 2002 BOS Hunting Decoys and BOS Northwestern Michigan Carving Show. He is a Wildfowl Carving Magazine author and 2007 winner of the Michigan Heritage Award.

The Bird Sanctuary is located at 12685 E. C Ave., one mile north of M-89 and just west of 40th Street.
