Annual MSU Dairy Club holiday cheese sale

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan State University Dairy Club annual holiday cheese sale fundraiser will take place Nov. 10-29.

Orders will be accepted online, by mail and by phone until 5 p.m. on Nov. 29. In addition to UPS delivery, orders can be picked up at the MSU Dairy Store entrance from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, Nov. 10-24 and Dec. 2-3.

For more information about the cheese sale, visit www.msudairyclubcheese.com or contact Jessica Makowski, the 2010 cheese sale chairperson, at (586) 764-8996 or makows24@msu.edu.

Gift recipients may not realize that the annual holiday sale is a fundraiser for the Dairy Club and is a valuable learning experience for its members. Students take the lead in managing the event from start to finish. Dairy Club alumni agree that the event fosters opportunities to grow and learn outside the traditional classroom environment.

“Making sure the fundraiser is successful takes a lot of work and effort from a number of people over many months, so this type of atmosphere makes it fun and enjoyable,” said Sarah Black, who works at the Michigan Farm Bureau and chaired the sale as an undergraduate. “Looking back, many of us became good friends because of all the time we spent working together on the cheese sale.”

Karmen Jackson, who chaired the 2009 cheese sale, said the personal, hands-on attention to detail resonates with customers, many of whom return year after year to purchase holiday gifts.

MSU enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the cheese sold has many MSU connections. First, it’s produced in the Dairy Foods Processing Plant. And the milk comes from animals consigned to the Dairy Club’s annual Spartan Spectacular sale that takes place in conjunction with the Michigan Holstein Association’s Spring Foundation Sale.
