The recently passed economic stimulus package includes an increase in grant funding, meaning more MSU students will see the positive effects of it, said Val Meyers, associate director in the MSU Office of Financial Aid.

“This increase in the federal funding will be a very, very good thing because it’s going to reduce the amount of borrowing students need to do so they don’t have as much debt when they graduate,” she said.

Last fiscal year, there were 7,004 students who received a Pell Grant and, with the increase, Meyers said their funding will expand and 300-400 more students will be eligible for Pell Grants.

“They don’t have to limit their career choices based on ‘Oh, I have to repay my student loans so I have to think about how much I’m going to earn,’ instead of maybe following their passion and doing what they really want to do,” she said.
