Staff profiles: Michael McCune

Pottery and ceramics line the shelves of Michael McCune’s office – the result of his years as art shop coordinator at the Kresge Art Center. McCune oversees ceramics and sculpture in the Kresge’s lower level, delivering a number of services.

“I maintain all the equipment,” McCune said. “I do all the ordering for the place. I also help students with projects and basically figuring out how to construct things. I fire all the kilns.

“I do all the safety training with the students and faculty and/or staff that come through here. I also assist with all of our workshops that come through this area too.”

In March, the Kresge Art Center partnered with the Asian Studies Center to present a workshop by Japan’s prestigious Shigaraki potters.
“They were a really cool bunch of guys,” McCune said. “They were a lot of fun.”

McCune also helps with Kresge’s community outreach program. The center fields calls from community members seeking to donate equipment, receive appraisals or help in repairing their precious artwork.

“We’ve had a variety of (pottery) wheels and old equipment that’s been donated to us, and we fix it back up and put it back into working condition,” McCune said. “It’s a lot of variety in the job.”
