The new Michigan State University Surplus Store and Recycling Center has been open since September, but one addition that has yet to be unveiled is the highly anticipated drop-off center, which will be open 24/7 to the campus and off-campus MSU community.
The drop-off center will officially open for business Oct. 19, the first day of Campus Sustainability Week.
The drop-off center is located across from the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center, off of Farm Lane on Green Way, and consists of a circular drive and large enclosed containers for recyclables. MSU faculty, staff, on- and off-campus students, and the surrounding community may drop off materials from home or work that can be recycled.
“Vice President for Finance and Operation Fred Poston wanted to fulfill a commitment to the city of East Lansing that we would support the recycling effort for the MSU community on and off campus,” said Ruth Daoust, manager of the Surplus Store and Recycling Center.
The outdoor drop-off center is accessible from Service Road and Farm Lane Road. A sign at the entrance indicates what is collected.
With all of the anticipation of the drop-off center and 24/7 availability, MSU Recycling is hoping for a warm welcome and lots of MSU support to keep another part of the university’s five R’s going strong (reduce, reuse/recycle, research/re-educate, redesign and rethink).
“The goal is to divert as much material from the landfill by faculty, staff, students and visitors to the MSU campus,” Daoust said.
Materials accepted are white paper, mixed paper, newspaper, #1 and #2 plastics, cardboard, boxboard (such as cereal and cracker boxes), clear and brown glass, tin, steel and aluminum.
Campus Sustainability Week, which runs Oct. 19-23, is a national week dedicated to exploring the possibilities of social, economic, and environmental sustainability in higher education.
