MSU course to teach how to ride, buy, handle horses

Are you 18 years old or older and want to learn more about horses or how to ride them safely? Did you ride a horse as a child and wish you knew how to do it again? Are you the parent of a young rider and want to improve your riding skills? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then the Michigan State University Adult Horse Evening Camp is for you!

A hands-on course, the MSU Adult Horse Evening Camp consists of four two-hour sessions scheduled for Aug. 3, 5, 10 and 12. Each session takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the MSU Horse Teaching and Research Center located at 3327 Collins Road (on Collins Road between Forest and Dunkel roads).

Session topics will cover safety, behavior, equipment, purchasing decisions and riding. More specifically, the Aug. 3 class will discuss basic horse safety such as catching, haltering, leading and tying; the Aug. 5 class will focus on horse behavior and the basics of riding, including saddling, mounting and steering; the Aug. 10 class will teach the basics of bits, tack and equipment followed by a second session on riding; and the final class on Aug. 12 will cover pre-purchasing exams and conclude with a final riding session.

Camp instructors will be Karen Waite, MSU equine Extension specialist; Paula Hitzler, manager of the MSU teaching and research center; and students from the MSU equine program. MSU horses will be used for the riding classes.

The $260 per rider registration fee, payable to MSU, includes all materials and refreshments, and is due by July 24.

To register, send payment along with your name, address, phone number and e-mail address to the MSU Equine Program, 1287 Anthony Hall, MSU, East Lansing, MI 48824. To register by phone with a credit card or for more information, contact the MSU Equine Program at (517) 432-5402.
