Design Day showcases innovations of ‘Spartan engineers’

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Spartan engineers will present their innovations – ranging from heat-reactive clothing as a wheelchair accessory to a vaccine refrigerator for remote regions – during the Michigan State University College of Engineering Design Day Friday, May 1, at the MSU Union.

The 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. event showcases the accomplishments of the next generation of engineering designers, innovators and entrepreneurs, while providing an opportunity for interaction between college and precollege students. The event is held at the end of each fall and spring semester.

Participating are students from the Applied Engineering Sciences program, and the departments of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

College of Engineering teams, involved with projects that demand the integration of engineering theory and practice, will be in the spotlight. Robotic competitions, innovative machines and prototype design builds are highlights of the day. Middle school and high school students also will participate in design activities, exploring engineering principles while interacting with their peers and college students.

Headliners of the event are the graduating seniors as they present their capstone design projects through posters and oral presentations. Each senior is a member of a team that has designed a new or improved product or process for a project sponsor, including: Auto-Owners Insurance; Blue Sky Chicago; Boeing; BorgWarner; GE Aviation; IBM; Lear Corp.; Microsoft; Mobile Digimedics, LLC; Motorola; Shell Oil Co.; the Toro Company; and Texas Instruments.
