MSU students among individual college commencement speakers

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University students will share their MSU experiences and words of advice with fellow students at individual college spring 2008 commencement ceremonies.

The college ceremonies, which feature the presentation of various alumni, student and other awards, are in addition to MSU’s undergraduate convocation for all undergraduate candidates and the advanced degree ceremony.

Of the 6,403 undergraduate degree candidates, 4,732 are spring 2008 semester students and 1,671 are summer 2008 degree candidates.

A total of 1,394 master’s, 417 doctoral and 373 other advanced degree students are candidates for degrees.

The main and student speakers at individual college ceremonies and the undergraduate degree counts are listed below, as well as the time and location of the ceremonies.

THURSDAY, MAY 1

College of Osteopathic Medicine, 11 a.m., Wharton Center for Performing Arts. Peter B. Ajluni, Bloomfield Hills, doctor of osteopathic medicine and president of the American Osteopathic Association, will provide the commencement address. Senior class president Jeffrey Frey of Eyota, Minn., will present the student address.

FRIDAY, MAY 2

MSU Undergraduate Convocation, 1 p.m., Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Gro Harlem Brundtland, former prime minister of Norway, will be the main convocation speaker. Jessica McFadden of Dowagiac, a communication major in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, will present remarks on behalf of the senior class.

College of Communication Arts and Sciences, 3:30 p.m., Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Alexandra S. Bahou of Romeo, a journalism major, will present the senior class address. There are 940 undergraduate candidates for degrees.

College of Veterinary Medicine, 4 p.m., Wharton Center for Performing Arts. K. Paige Carmichael, associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Georgia, Athens, will present the main address. Class president Jennifer L. Johnson of Monticello, N.Y., will speak on behalf of the graduating class.

Veterinary Technology, 7 p.m., E-100 Veterinary Medical Center. Fernando Garcia, a doctor of veterinary medicine at MSU, will present the main address. Michelle A. Norkowski of Alpena, who is majoring in veterinary technology, will provide student remarks on behalf of the spring graduates. Allison F. Stephen of Jackson, also a veterinary technology major, will speak for the summer graduates.

MSU Advanced Degree Ceremony, 7 p.m., Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Peter Raven, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden, will be the speaker at this ceremony.

SATURDAY, MAY 3

College of Social Science, 8:45 a.m., Jack Breslin Student Events Center.
Jean Palutik, professor and member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change based in the Hadley Centre at the U.K. Met Office, will provide the main address. Michael B. Kelly of Northville, a criminal justice major, will present senior class remarks. There are 1,309 undergraduate candidates for degrees.

College of Nursing, 9 a.m., Wharton Center for Performing Arts. Barbara Hertzler, executive vice president and chief operating officer at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland, Pontiac, will be the commencement speaker. There are 121 undergraduate candidates for degrees.

College of Education, 9:30 a.m., MSU Auditorium. Lauren Jones Young, program director of The Spencer Foundation, Chicago, will present the main address. Cierra B. Presberry of Detroit, a special education major, and Katrina M. Lawrence of Lansing, a kinesiology major, will present senior responses. There are 434 undergraduate candidates for degrees.

College of Natural Science, 12:30 p.m., Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Kara Baker of Dearborn, a nutritional sciences major, will present student remarks. There are 843 undergraduate candidates for degrees.

James Madison College, 12:30 p.m., Wharton Center for Performing Arts. Jeff Williams, senior vice president for technology and public policy, Public Sector Consultants, Inc., Lansing, and an MSU alum, will present the main address. Kristin M. Sulewski of Chicago, an international relations, and social relations and policy senior, will present student remarks. There are 247 undergraduate candidates for degrees.

College of Arts and Letters, 1 p.m., MSU Auditorium. Timothy J. Cerullo of Livonia, a senior English major, will provide student remarks. There are 513 undergraduate candidates for degrees.

Eli Broad College of Business, 4 p.m., Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Philip J. Hickey, Jr., chairperson and chief executive officer of Park Row Ventures, will present the main address. Lauren E. Walker of Royal Oak, a senior marketing major, will provide student remarks. There are 1,007 undergraduate candidates for degrees.

College of Music, 4 p.m., Wharton Center for Performing Arts. William D. Brohn, Clinton, Conn., award-winning arranger and orchestrator, and MSU alum, will present the main address of the inaugural college commencement ceremony for the College of Music. Laura Donnelly of East Lansing, a senior music performance major, will present student remarks. There are 65 undergraduate candidates for degrees.

College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, 7:30 p.m., Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Anthony J. McCaul of Lake Odessa, a senior agriscience major, will provide student remarks. There are 606 undergraduate candidates for degrees.

SUNDAY, MAY 4

College of Engineering, 1:30 p.m., Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Keith L. Barnes of Detroit, a computer science major, will present the senior class address. There are 295 undergraduate candidates for degrees.

FRIDAY, MAY 9

MSU College of Law, 4 p.m., Wharton Center for Performing Arts. Marilyn Kelly, justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, Lansing, will present the commencement address.

SATURDAY, MAY 10

College of Human Medicine, noon, Wharton Center for Performing Arts.
