Media credentials available for coverage of MSU’s December commencement ceremonies

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Commencement ceremonies for Michigan State University’s 2,522 fall semester degree candidates will be Friday, Dec. 5, and Saturday, Dec. 6, at Jack Breslin Student Events Center on the corner of Harrison Road and Kalamazoo Street.

 

The College of Social Science has the most undergraduate degree candidates, with a total of 354. The Eli Broad College of Business is No. 2 with 333. In total, there are 1,707 bachelor degree candidates and 815 advanced degree candidates.

 

Commencement speakers will be Steven Squyres, principal investigator of NASA’s Mars Rover project; John McCoy, the former chairman and CEO of Bank One; and award-winning filmmaker and MSU alumnus Jack Epps Jr.

 

MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon will preside over the ceremonies.

 

Commencement media packets are available from Wednesday to noon Friday at MSU University Relations, 403 Olds Hall.

 

Media Parking

Media parking is available in the west side of Lot 63 off Harrison Road, immediately south of the Breslin Center. Media must obtain a parking pass from University Relations. This pass must be displayed to enter the lot.

 

Breslin Center Entry

Media should enter through the ticket entrance on the east side of the building. Media will be accommodated on Platform 111. An audio feed will be available. Print media will need media identification to cover the event.

 

Television and still photographers need to wear press/photo armbands, which are available from University Relations. The armbands allow photographers to enter and move about the arena. Radio reporters may enter by presenting credentials.

 

General Information

Squyres will speak to advanced degree candidates at 7 p.m. Friday. He will receive an honorary doctor of science. 

 

At the 10 a.m. Saturday ceremony, McCoy will address undergraduates from James Madison College, the Eli Broad College of Business and the colleges of Arts and Letters, Education, Music and Social Science. He will receive an honorary doctor of business.

 

And at the 2 p.m. Saturday ceremony, Epps will speak to undergraduates from the colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Communication Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Natural Science, Nursing and Lyman Briggs. He will receive an honorary doctor of fine arts.

 

MSU will present five other individuals with honorary degrees.

 

The MSU College of Law will hold its commencement ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, 55 S. Harrison Road.
