Michigan State students honored during sesquicentennial events

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Five Michigan State University seniors were named to the Homecoming Court during the university’s recent Homecoming Week, marking the university’s sesquicentennial.

Court members have various honors and responsibilities throughout the Homecoming Week that included participating in the Water Carnival, sesquicentennial parade, Grand Awards ceremony and half-time at the homecoming football game versus Northwestern University.

The chosen candidates exemplify academic excellence, leadership qualities, community involvement and Spartan Spirit.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni nominate individuals for Homecoming Court. Students are selected by a committee made up of students, faculty, staff and administrators, after personal interviews highlighting their honors and achievements.

Members of the 2005 MSU Homecoming Court are:

  • Allison Cherrette, Marquette, is the daughter of Joe and Sue Cherrette. Cherrette is majoring in marketing in The Eli Broad College of Business. Some of her activities and interests include art, community service and traveling.

  • Kourtney Kubacki, Eagle River, Wis., is the daughter of Joe Boxrucker and Karen Kubacki. Kubacki is majoring in hospitality business with a specialization in hospitality real estate development in The Eli Broad College of Business. Some of her activities and interests include member of the Eta Sigma Delta Hospitality Business Honor Society and serving as a student assistant to the MSU vending services coordinator. She also enjoys camping, the outdoors and traveling.

  • Armon Mahajerin, Saginaw, is son of Enayat and Taherah Mahajerin.Mahajerin is majoring in mechanical engineering in the College of Engineering. Some of his activities and interests include running, biking, reading, movies, his family and anything related to MSU.
  • Harold Shelton, Detroit, is the son of Harold and Jennifer Shelton. Shelton is majoring in journalism in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. Some of his interests and activities include Spartan sports, video games, helping other people, Detroit sports and fantasy football.
  • Sarah Swistak, West Bloomfield, is the daughter of Leonard and Patricia Swistak. Swistak is majoring in journalism in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences with a specialization in American Sign Language. Some of her interests and activities include sign language, volunteer work, knitting, black and white photography and broadcast journalism.She is a member of the Phi Sigma Pi  and currently has an internship at ABC-53 television.
