EAST LANSING, Mich. While signs of spring are peaking through the winter skies, gardeners anxiously await the opportunity to get back to their gardens. To keep the early gardening excitement flowing, the Michigan State University Master Gardener Program and the Horticulture Gardening Institute will host an extraordinary summer experience, The Grand Hotel: Gardens of Mackinac Island."

This one-of-a-kind event includes special garden tours and launches a new online program, Plant Identification and Use Series, offered by the institute.

The two-day event begins Sunday, Aug. 22, and continues through Tuesday, Aug. 24. It is open to all gardeners and lovers of gardens. The cost is $495 per couple, per night, based on double occupancy, or $420 per night, based on single occupancy, which includes meals and access to the new online program for 12 weeks. Reservations are being taken now and space is limited.

From the moment guests arrive on Mackinac Island they will be surrounded by plants and flowers. The Grand Hotel is hosting a welcome reception on the worlds longest front porch adorned with 5,000 geraniums, followed by dinner in the Main Dining Room.

Monday begins with breakfast and a special presentation by Allan Armitage, one of the worlds foremost gardening experts. He will share his energizing vision of What Your Garden Can Be. Following the event, attendees can continue learning at home through a unique online program, Herbaceous Perennials: Identification, Culture and Garden Attributes, developed by Armitage and offered as part of the institutes new online program Plant Identification and Use Series.

Lunch will be served in the Grand Hotels Tea Garden followed by a private tour of the hotels world-renowned gardens with Steve Bernard, an MSU graduate and head of grounds.  The remainder of the afternoon is open to explore the island. Guests will meet up again in the evening for a special banquet in their honor.

Tuesday morning features breakfast and a tour of private gardens on the island. The event will end at noon; however, guests who choose to spend more time on the island can take advantage of special hotel rates being offered for Tuesday and Wednesday evening.

Mackinac Island is a true gardeners paradise, said Mary McLellan, co-executive director of the Horticulture Gardening Institute and state master gardener coordinator for Michigan. I am fortunate to be leading this inspirational trip and to have the opportunity to work with Allan Armitage launching the institutes new online program and hosting him during this special event. He is an inspiration to all gardeners.
