EAST LANSING, Mich. � Michigan State University�s Office of International Studies and Programs, in cooperation with the MSU Alumni Association, has posted a virtual gallery of winning photographs related to MSU�s international mission.
This is the fifth annual international Global Focus photography competition for MSU students, faculty, staff and alumni. This year, the contest received nearly 400 entries from 136 people. Two MSU faculty members and one photographer and studio owner from the community selected the top winners and the honorable mention recipients.
MSU faculty who submitted the award-winning pictures are:
- Phillip Durst, MSU Extension dairy agent. He won the first-place prize of one night�s accommodations at Brook Lodge. Durst�s picture, �Panama Smile,� was taken in Panama in 2003.
- Michael Kron, associate professor in the Department of Medicine. He won the second-place prize of a dinner for two at the State Room in the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center. Kron�s picture, �Children Diving for Coins,� was taken in the Philippines in 2003.
- Joy Campbell, an instructor in the English Language Center. She won the third-place prize of $150 of color film from Castle Photo.Campbell�s photo, �Pick a Jar, Any Jar,� was taken in Morocco in 1999.
The students who submitted the award-winning pictures are:
- Elizabeth Farina of Shrewsbury, Mass, an advertising master�s student. She won the first-place prize of one free roundtrip ticket to anywhere in the continental United States from Classic Travel. Farina�s photo, �Culture Overarches,� was taken in France in 2000.
- Jacob Baldwin of Tecumseh, a junior majoring in studio art. He won the second-place prize of an electric flash for an electric camera from The Camera Shop of Lansing. Baldwin�s photo, �First Communion,� was taken in Ireland in 2003.
- Janelle Shane of Niles, a junior majoring in electrical engineering. She won the third-place prize of a $100 gift certificate to Hankins Gallery. Shane�s photo, �In the Cathedral Courtyard,� was taken in France in 2003.
MSU alumni who submitted the award-winning pictures are:
- Donald Roberts of Warren, Mass., a 1962 graduate in mechanical engineering. He won the first-place prize of a $100 gift certificate to Carriage Travel Inc. Roberts� photo, �Girl in Red,� was taken in China in 1997.
- Rob Glew of East Lansing, a 1997 graduate in anthropology. He won the second-place prize of a $100 gift certificate to Saper Galleries and Custom Framing. Glew�s photo, �Long Walk Home,� was taken in Niger in 2002.
- Harry Andrews of Mason, a member of the MSU Alumni Association. He won the third-place prize of four tickets to a family show of his choice at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Andrews� photo, �City Girls in Village House,� was taken in India in 2003.
Entries � which had to be original photographs taken outside the United States � were judged on artistic expressiveness, creativity, relevance to MSU�s international mission and the quality of the image.
Framed enlargements of the 2003 top three photos from each category will be displayed in the lobby of the International Center.
