EAST LANSING, Mich. - Individuals interested in enhancing their health don't need four years of medical school to get the "skinny" on what's new in the way of improving their health - just six weeks of "Mini Medical School."

The six-week course, offered in October and November by the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine through the MSU Alumni Association's Evening College, will include sessions on basic anatomy, physiology and pathology - all designed to improve understanding of what happens inside and outside the body.

Sessions include "Preserving the Pedestal," focusing on maintaining healthy feet; "Diseases of Terror," about organisms such as botulism and how to look for symptoms and protect family and community; "Microbiology 101," looking at common bacteria, viruses and other organisms and how to deal with them in a global community; "The Skinny on Skin," - ways of keeping skin healthy; "Those Wonderful Orbs," looking at how eyes work, what threatens them and how to care for them; and "The Ultimate Food Processor," in which students learn the intricacies of the gastrointestinal system and how to keep the internal "supply chain" healthy.

Evening College, a lifelong education program through the MSU Alumni Association, offers a variety of quality noncredit evening and weekend classes for adults in the greater Lansing and central Michigan areas. More than 1,000 adults register for courses each year.

Also among this semester's courses are "Aging with Enthusiasm, Grace and Dignity"; "Exercise Motivation"; "How to Simplify Your Life"; "How to Meditate for Stress Reduction, Health and Peak Performance"; "Journeys of Migration: Three Novels Document Movement of Peoples"; "Presidential Power in the Age of the Patriot Act"; "Stand-up Comedy and Humor Writing"; and "All About Cheese."

Online classes include "Floral Design"; "Gardens of England: Exotic Cornwall"; "Gardens of England: Traditional Countryside"; and "Travel Security Awareness."
