EAST LANSING, Mich. - Valerie Belgrave, a Trinidadian artist, novelist and playwright, will give a public lecture on Wednesday, April 10, at Michigan State University. She will present her remarks at 8 p.m. in 339 Case Hall.
In addition to her lecture, "An Artist's View of Painting, Writing and Thinking in Caribbean Cultures," Belgrave will exhibit several of her paintings and show a video of her batik art.
Belgrave has published three novels including the acclaimed "Ti Marie" and is due to release her latest work, "Dance the Water," this year.
Her batik art has been exhibited in Canada, England, the United States and the Caribbean. Additionally, her play, "Night of the Wolf," has been performed at Trinidad's historic Little Carib Theatre and at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica.
The lecture is co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science and James Madison College in conjunction with the course "Culture, Politics and Post-Colonialism," taught by William B. Allen, professor of political science, and Folke Lindahl, associate professor of political theory in James Madison.
The Templeton Institute for the Advanced Study of Freedom and the Atlas Economic Research Foundation also provided grant support.
