EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State University Alumni Association (MSUAA) will honor individuals involved in entertainment and business as well as community service activities, all of whom exemplify outstanding volunteer service to and support of MSU as part of Homecoming week activities.
The MSU Alumni Association Grand Awards ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in Room Big 10A at the Kellogg Center. Awards will be presented in four categories, Honorary Alumni Award, Distinguished Alumni Award, Outstanding Philanthropist Award and Alumni Service Award.
Distinguished Alumni Award
The following individuals will receive a Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest award presented by the MSUAA. It is presented to MSU graduates who have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service and who have achieved the highest level of professional accomplishment, including special honors or recognition, and who demonstrate personal integrity and character.
PAUL BARROWS, San Antonio, Texas
Retired Army Col. Paul L. Barrows, '66, DVM '67, was named chief of the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps and director of the Department of Defense Veterinary Service Activity in 1995.
Barrows was the senior military veterinarian responsible for more than 420 veterinarians and 1,200 warrant officers, non-commissioned officers, soldiers and civilians. He directed services provided within the Department of Defense and other federal agencies in the United States and more than 600 sites worldwide. He completed 30 years of military service with the Veterinary Corps in August 2000.
Among the long list of military awards and decorations earned by Barrows are the National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Medal and four awards each of both the Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. His many civilian recognitions include the James A. McCallum Award for Excellence in Veterinary Medicine and Public Health. In 1996, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine.
LINDA CHAMBLISS, Phoenix, Ariz.
Linda Chambliss, M.D. '80, assistant director of maternal-fetal medicine at the Maricopa County Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz., is currently a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Arizona School of Medicine. She has received many teaching awards, including Teacher of the Year and the National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Teaching.
She is a reviewer for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Obstetrics and Gynecology. She also has served as an editor of the American Medical Association's "Guidelines for Practitioners on the Mental Health Effects of Family Violence."
Chambliss serves on the board of Arizona Aid to Adoption of Special Kids, was a founding member of the Women's Street Support Center and has served on the board of Maggie's Place, a shelter for homeless pregnant women.
RICHARD CORDRAY, Grove City, Ohio
Richard Cordray, '81, an MSU Marshall Scholarship recipient, is an Ohio political leader and attorney specializing in appellate and constitutional law. Cordray completed his education at Oxford University and later at the University of Chicago.
He clerked for two members of the U.S. Supreme Court, won election as a state representative in Ohio, became the Ohio state solicitor from 1993 to 1994, and was the Democratic nominee for Ohio attorney general in 1998. He has argued many cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, including the presidential recount case in 2000.
Cordray has an outstanding record of volunteer service, having amassed a notable record of pro bono legal public service. He serves MSU as a member of the James Madison College Board of Visitors.
JACK DEBOER, Wichita, Kan.
Jack P. DeBoer, '52, chairperson and chief executive officer of the Candlewood Hotel Co. Inc., founded the Residence Inn and sold the 103-hotel system to the Marriott Corp. in 1985. He co-founded Summerfield Hotel Corp. in 1988 and has developed more than 16,000 apartments nationwide.
Candlewood owns, operates and licenses 100 Candlewood Suites coast to coast, including the hotel at MSU's University Park Complex. Candlewood also operates and licenses Cambridge Suites.
In 1990 DeBoer paid for the complete renovation of the Theta Chi fraternity house at MSU. He has served as chairperson of Youth for Understanding, the world's leading student exchange organization and as president of the Wichita Chamber of Commerce. In 2001 he received the hotel industry Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of California at Los Angeles.
ANTHONY HEALD, Los Angeles, Calif.
Anthony Heald, '71, professional actor and star of the current FOX television series, "Boston Public," has performed in many local, regional, off-Broadway and Broadway theatrical productions, receiving Tony nominations for "Anything Goes" and "Love! Valour! Compassion!" as well as four Obie awards for his off-Broadway work. He will serve as grand marshal of the 2001 Homecoming parade.
His film credits include "Silence of the Lambs," "The Pelican Brief," "The Client," "Silkwood" and "Proof of Life." His television appearances include "Frasier," "The X-Files," "Law and Order" and "The Practice." He spent one season at the prestigious Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Heald has strongly supported local theater as a volunteer and has hosted groups from MSU visiting New York. In 2000, he won a Crystal Spartan Award for Outstanding Achievement in Film, presented at the Spartans In Hollywood gala event in Los Angeles.
ANTHONY HOPP, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
Anthony J. Hopp, '67, M.A. '68, chairperson and CEO of Campbell-Ewald, Michigan's oldest and largest advertising agency, joined the agency 33 years ago and helped the company become the nation's 13th largest agency with clients such as Chevrolet, the U.S. Navy, AC Delco, Pier 1 Imports and Michelin.
An industry leader, he served on the boards of the Adcraft Club of Detroit, the Michigan Advertising Industry Alliance, the American Advertising Agency Association and the American Advertising Federation.
In 1997 Hopp instituted a companywide "Four Seasons of Giving" program to set the industry pace for charitable contributions. The agency contributes pro bono advertising for the National Fatherhood initiative and the American Cancer Society's Colorectal Cancer advertising program. He supports many organizations, including the Women's Committee for Hospice Care.
DONNA HRINAK, Caracas, Venezuela
Donna J. Hrinak, '72, U.S. ambassador to Venezuela, became the first female career Foreign Service officer to attain the rank of ambassador, when she was named ambassador to the Dominican Republic in 1994. In 1997, she was named ambassador to Bolivia. Her Foreign Service career includes assignments in Poland, Mexico, Columbia and Brazil.
When she was ambassador to the Dominican Republic, she traveled a great distance to spend time hosting a group of students from MSU working on an outreach project. While in Bolivia, Hrinak helped arrange key appointments for an MSU research and outreach delegation.
A recipient of many public service awards, she was named one of America's Ten Outstanding Young Working Women in 1985 by Glamour magazine.
DICK POSTHUMUS, Lansing, Mich.
Michigan Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus, '72, began his public service career in 1982, winning the 31st district in the Michigan Senate.
He served as Senate majority leader from 1991 to 1998 and sponsored Proposal A, which cut property taxes dramatically, as well as other legislation aimed at creating charter schools and Renaissance zones in decaying inner cities and rural areas. In 1998, he was elected lieutenant governor, serving alongside Gov. John Engler.
He is an active volunteer with the American Legion, Lowell Area Schools, Kent County 4-H and numerous chambers, rotaries and Jaycees. He served as a board member of the National Habitat for Humanity and co-chairperson of Michigan Build, and led a trade mission to Japan.
DONALD RIEGLE JR., Birmingham, Mich.
Donald W. Riegle Jr., MBA '61, former U.S. senator and current deputy chairperson of Shandwick, Americas, was elected in 1967 to the U.S. House of Representatives and served four terms. In 1976 he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served three terms until 1994.
He was chairperson of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee and was the only senator to serve concurrently on the three major economic policy committees. He was a leading voice on trade issues, health care reform, the financial services industry and the Federal Deposit Insurance system. He is the author of the best seller, O Congress.
Riegle served as an adjunct professor at MSU and also taught at Harvard University, the University of Southern California and Boston University. He is a board member of Anthem Inc., Rx Optical, Cyberian Outpost.com and eteam.com inc. He has won numerous awards, including several from veterans' organizations.
JAMES STEELE, Houston, Texas
James Harlan Steele, DVM '41, professor emeritus of the University of Texas School of Public Health and worldwide medical pioneer, founded the American Board of Public Health Veterinarians (now the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine) in 1950 and was vice president of the American Association of World Health from 1965 to 1985.
He established the American Veterinary Epidemiology Society in 1964 and served as its president until 1990. He served on the President's Commission on Consumer Affairs from 1969 to 1989 and on many international fronts, including the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization, and helped establish veterinary health programs from Latin America to Russia.
He has received numerous awards, including the Public Health Service's Meritorious Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Award from the Public Health Service and the Bronfman Award from the American Public Health Association.
JAMES VOTRUBA, Lakeside Park, Ky.
James C. Votruba, '68, M.A. '70, Ph.D. '74, became president of Northern Kentucky University in 1997. From 1987 to 1997, he was vice provost for university outreach at MSU and directed a $10.2 million Kellogg Foundation grant supporting MSU outreach.
Previously, he held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and at the State University of New York at Binghamton.
Active in national higher education circles, Votruba currently serves as chairperson of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities' Task Force on Public Engagement. He was a Kellogg Foundation national fellow and received the 2000 Distinguished Alumni Award from MSU's College of Education. He serves as co-chairperson of the Greater Cincinnati Metropolitan Growth Alliance.
Honorary Alumni Awards
The following individuals will be recognized with an Honorary Alumni Award, which is presented to friends of MSU who have demonstrated continuing outstanding volunteer service to the university on a local, state, national or international level. Recipients possess the highest standards of integrity and character, positively reflecting, impacting and enhancing society and the prestige of MSU.
CHRIS HOLMAN, Lansing, Mich.
Chris Holman, radio personality and publisher of the Greater Lansing Business Monthly, has hosted the popular "Chris Holman Morning Show" on WJIM-AM 1230 Radio since 1993. He also has hosted the "Business Beat" report for WLNS-TV Channel 6 since 1990.
A business entrepreneur, he founded H&H Inc., a Lansing marketing consulting firm, and publishes a monthly magazine. Previously he was a teacher, coach, athletic director and principal with the Huron Valley-Harland school district.
Active in civic and community affairs, Holman served in various leadership positions in the Capital Area United Way, as a board member of the Capital Region Airport Authority, as chairperson of the board of governors of the Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau and as a board member of First of America Bank and REO Transportation Museum.
MARILYN RUTHERFORD, Burr Ridge, Ill.
Marilyn Rutherford, former president of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and president of the American Women's Club of Belgium, is a leader for volunteer and philanthropic groups. Rutherford began her volunteer work in Antwerp, Belgium, where she joined the American Women's Club, becoming its president in 1970; the American Protestant Church; and the American-Belgian Association.
After the tragic death of their son in 1975, Marilyn and her husband, Jack, established a perpetual scholarship fund in their son's name at MSU's School of Criminal Justice.
Returning to the United States in 1979, she served as evangelism chairperson for the Hinsdale Methodist Church and supported many projects, including volunteer work to deliver "meals at your door." She was initiated into the P.E.O. Sisterhood in 1992 and just completed a two-year term as president.
Alumni Service Awards
The following individuals will receive an Alumni Service Award, which is presented to alumni who have demonstrated continuing outstanding volunteer service to MSU and/or meritorious public service on a local, state, national or international level. Recipients possess the highest standards of integrity and character, positively reflecting, impacting and enhancing society and the prestige of the university.
JAMES ADAMS, East Lansing, Mich.
Jim Adams, '52, longtime sports director for WKAR-TV and WKAR Radio, is widely known as the "Voice of MSU."
During his three decades as sports director from 1963 to 1993, Adams handled the play-by-play broadcasts of more than 2,000 athletic events, including football, basketball, hockey and baseball - more than anyone else in Spartan history. In his final eight years, he co-hosted a daily radio call-in show with Earle Robinson.
In 1954, Adams began a WKAR tradition with a program on Broadway musical theatre. Even in retirement, after 47 years, he still presents the program every Sunday. Adams has taught at MSU Evening College and is a frequent speaker at gatherings of Downtown Coaches and MSU Rebounders. He has received a special service award from the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame.
HENRY BULLOUGH, Okemos, Mich.
Henry Bullough, '55, retired National Football League (NFL) and MSU football coach, served as an MSU assistant coach from 1959 to 1970 and masterminded the defenses of two national championship teams (1965 and 1966).
In the NFL, he won a Super Bowl ring in 1970 as coach of the Baltimore Colts. His prowess as defensive coordinator with the New England Patriots, Cincinnati Bengals, Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions and as head coach of the Pittsburgh Maulers and the Buffalo Bills, earned him the nickname "Doctor of Defense."
In 1994, he returned as MSU's Spartan football defensive coordinator. He was a member of the 1952 national championship team and the 1953 Big Ten and Rose Bowl championships teams. Since his retirement in 1995, he has spent numerous hours speaking to youth groups and raising funds for the Varsity "S" Alumni Club and former MSU All-American George Webster.
Outstanding Philanthropist Award
The following individuals will receive a Outstanding Philanthropist Award, which is presented to an individual, family, association, corporation or foundation with a proven record of providing major, on-going financial support and leadership to MSU. Recipients demonstrated outstanding philanthropic responsibility toward MSU.
FRED ARNOLD, West Palm Beach, Fla., and Ann Arbor, Mich.
Fred Arnold, '39, retired president of Marflax Corp. of Ann Arbor, worked as an agent for Equitable Life Assurance Society and later founded the Marflax Corp., a mortgage lender of construction loans.
He has won three state awards from the Michigan Junior Chamber of Commerce and was inducted into the Equitable Life Hall of Fame.
A loyal and dedicated Spartan, Arnold has established the Fred Arnold Professorship in Wood Products Sales, Marketing and Manufacturing Endowment Fund in MSU's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. He provided generous assistance for the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center. In 1995, he presented his daughter, Robin Lammers, with a membership in MSU's President's Club.
JEFFREY COLE, Birmingham, Mich.
Jeffrey N. Cole, '70, former president and CEO of Ferrous Processing and Trading Co., Detroit, practiced law with Hyman and Rice from 1974 to 1979 and then joined Alport Scrap & Salvage Co., becoming president in 1985.
He expanded the company into the Ferrous Processing and Trading Co. and turned it into the largest metal recycling firm in the Midwest and a worldwide leader in the industry.
An active volunteer on behalf of MSU's Honors College, Cole serves as chairperson of the Honors College Director's Advisory Council and has established a number of funds, including the Jeffrey N. Cole Honors College Fund, the Jeffrey N. Cole Visiting Lectureship and the Jeffrey N. Cole Honors College Study Abroad Fund. In addition, he made a significant financial commitment to restore and renovate Eustace-Cole Hall, home of the Honors College. He also serves on the MSU Foundation board of directors.
DELIA KOO, Okemos, Mich., and Tallahassee, Fla.
Delia Z. F. Koo, M.S. '54, former professor of mathematics at Eastern Michigan University and widely published author in the mathematics field, has made possible the upcoming Delia Koo International Academic Center, the new academic wing and library of MSU's International Center.
She founded and served for many years as coordinator of MSU's Volunteer English Tutoring Program, donating hundreds of hours each year. She currently serves as one of the program's volunteer instructors.
She is the author of four mathematic textbooks and has received numerous academic honors.
