EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State University students, faculty and staff will be rolling up their sleeves in the next week-and-a-half to give blood to the American Red Cross during the eighth annual "MSU-Penn State Challenge."

The blood drive runs through Monday, Nov. 19. MSU has won only two out of the seven past challenges.

"The challenge definitely encourages people to donate because it appeals to their competitive nature," said David Bosman of Livonia, chairperson of the MSU-Penn State blood drive challenge. "Since the Sept. 11 attacks, a lot more people are out this year giving blood."

The goal of the drive is to increase the blood supply in the Great Lakes region. Blood drive personnel hope to collect 1,880 units of blood during the two-week drive, he said.

The Spartans will take on the Nitanny Lions of Penn State on Nov. 24 at MSU. The winner of the blood drive will be announced during halftime activities.

"Because the game falls around the Thanksgiving holiday, we use this opportunity to promote giving blood," Bosman said. "A lot of times not many people donate because they are busy with the holidays."

Individuals cannot give blood if they have spent more than three months in the United Kingdom, Bosman said. There are also restrictions on donors who weigh less than 110 pounds, who have received a tattoo in the last year or are sick with a cold or the flu.

Blood drive donation sites are set up across the MSU campus. Those who wish to donate can make an appointment by sending an email to spartanblood@hotmail.com.
