EAST LANSING, Mich. - In her more than 30-year career at Michigan State University, Barbara Given has received more than a few awards.

But even she may have to admit that the last several months have been extraordinary. Following are just a few of the accolades the College of Nursing professor has received recently:

  • International Sigma Theta Tau Elizabeth McWilliams Miller Award, honoring excellence in research.

  • Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) Pathfinder Distinguished Researcher Award. This is given to an internationally recognized researcher who has made significant contributions to the development of nursing research. Since 1978, Given has received more than $6.8 million in continuous research funding from the NINR.

  • MSU university distinguished professor designation. To be considered for this designation, the nominee must hold the rank of full professor with tenure and be recognized nationally and internationally for scholarly teaching and service achievements.

In addition, Given was featured in the October issue of Nursing Profile, a magazine that serves the nursing community throughout much of Michigan. Her photograph even graced the cover of the magazine.

"These awards reflect years of work, wonderful research team members, and faculty and administrative support," Given said. "These are not my achievements alone, but those of many colleagues and students.

"Success is also due to the thousands of patients and family members over the years who believe in our work and chose to participate in our research studies," she said.

A faculty member since 1966, Given is a nationally recognized expert on cancer care and, in particular, home care for patients with chronic illness. She also is one of the university's most prolific researchers.

Given earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Ohio State University and a doctorate from Michigan State.

She has served on a number of national commissions, panels and priority-setting research panels, including the President's Cancer Panel Special Commission on Breast Cancer, the Institute of Medicine Committee to Advise the Department of Defense on Breast Cancer and the NINR Committee on Research Priorities on Family Caregiving.

Given also is active as a grant reviewer for several National Institutes of Health agencies and provides reviews for numerous professional journals.
