EAST LANSING, Mich. - Are you looking for a way to ring in the holidays, spread some cheer and eat some candy? You can do it all while watching Fabiano's Homemade Chocolates attempt to make the world's longest handmade ribbon candy on Dec. 5, 1999. The candy-making festivities will take place at the Kellogg Conference Center at Michigan State University from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Big Ten Room.
Fabiano's, current record-holder of the Guinness World Book record for the largest candy cane, will be donating the time and talents of its employees, who will be mixing, pouring, flavoring and forming a giant-sized version of its famous ribbon candy at Kellogg Center.
"Fabiano's has a long family tradition of making holidays special," said Paul Ghinelli, owner of Fabiano's and organizer of the event. "This will be a lot of fun for our family and all the people who come out to join us. We get to spread some holiday cheer and help two great charities at the same time."
The event is open to the public and parking will be free at Kellogg Center. A $2 entrance donation will benefit MSU Safe Place, the nation's only on-campus domestic violence shelter, and Ele's Place, a healing center for grieving children. Everyone who attends will get a sample of candy. Fabiano's also will have its famous handmade candy canes available for purchase that day.
In addition to watching the Fabiano family create the confection, there will be plenty of other entertainment. Sparty, Santa, the MSU Spartan Pep Band and members of the MSU basketball team will be on hand to join in the festivities.
Fabiano's, in business since 1924, has five generations of candy makers who create delicious hand-made candy canes, ribbon candy, chocolates and more. Fabiano's stores are in downtown Lansing and Williamston.
