Sigma Kappa celebrates 125th anniversary

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sigma Kappa sorority at Michigan State University will host "Senior Swirl," an intergenerational dance for collegians and senior citizens, as part of the yearlong celebration of its 125th anniversary.

The dance will take place at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, at Okemos High School.

Sara Main, president of the local chapter, said events like "Senior Swirl" help shed a positive light on the Greek community.

"We want this year to be a milestone for Sigma Kappa," she said. "We're approaching the future with a positive outlook."

On Sept. 19, the local sorority raised more than $9,000 in the "Memory Walk," a walk through the MSU campus that benefited the National Alzheimer's Association. Nationally, Sigma Kappa is one of the largest contributors to the association.

Scholastically, the women of Sigma Kappa have another reason to celebrate. The women maintain the highest grade point average among the 16 sororities at MSU.

The chapter celebrates its national anniversary Tuesday, Nov. 9, with a reception at the chapter house, 518 M.A.C. Ave.

The all-women's organization was founded at Colby College in Waterville, Me., in 1874. Sigma Kappa sorority has 112 collegiate chapters and more than 120,000 members nationwide.
