EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State University's individual college ceremonies will feature remarks by students, alumni and other distinguished guests, as well as presentations of awards.
Convocation ceremonies will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 7, at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Nobel laureate and author Elie Wiesel will be the speaker for the event. He will receive an honorary doctor of humanities. Loretta L. VanCamp, co-discoverer of the cisplatin anti-cancer drug, will receive an honorary doctor of science.
Advanced degree ceremonies will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 7, also at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Jean Chrétien, the prime minister of Canada, will be the speaker. He will receive an honorary doctor of laws. Frederick S. Addy, former executive vice president, chief financial officer and director of the Amoco Corp., will receive an honorary doctor of humanities.
Individual college ceremonies will be held Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8. College ceremony speakers are:
Friday, May 7:
9 a.m. - Jean Chabut, director of the Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Control for the Michigan Department of Community Health. The student speaker is Amy Gawura of Dearborn Heights. (College of Nursing ceremony at the Wharton Center.)
3:30 p.m. - The senior class address will be presented by Jenne D. Myers, a communication major from Troy. (College of Communication Arts and Sciences ceremony at Jack Breslin Student Events Center.)
4 p.m. - Trisha Miller of East Lansing, a major in the Department of Theatre will present the senior address. (College of Arts and Letters ceremony at the MSU Auditorium.)
Saturday, May 8:
9 a.m. - Barbara Mieras, president of Davenport College of Business, Grand Rapids. Senior responses will be provided by David Lee Scott of Battle Creek, a kinesiology major, and Karen L. Houghton of Beverly Hills, an elementary education major. (College of Education ceremony at the MSU Auditorium.)
12:30 p.m. - Luther P. Christman, founder and dean emeritus of the Rush University College of Nursing. Student response by Brian O. Walters, a senior in political science and pre-law from Flint. (College of Social Science ceremony at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center.)
12:30 p.m. - Student presentations will be made by Nina Gargovic of Evanston, Ill., Department of Human Environment and Design; Amy Jo Reno of Menominee, Department of Family and Child Ecology; and Tanya Alkhazova of Oak Park, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. 3 p.m. - Sherman Garnett, dean-designee of James Madison College. The student speaker will be Mark Moon of Fenton. (James Madison College ceremony at the Wharton Center.)
4 p.m. - Senior class addresses will be presented by Kristy Ainslie, a chemical engineering major from Niles; Eric Bachelder, a chemical engineering major from Haslett; and Nwamaka Dallah, an engineering arts major from Lansing. (College of Engineering ceremony at the MSU Auditorium.)
4 p.m. - Peter F. Secchia, Grand Rapids, chairman of the board of Universal Forest Products Inc., former U.S. ambassador to Italy. Student remarks will be presented by Jennifer A. Savage of Dearborn Heights. (The Eli Broad College of Business ceremony at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center.)
