MSU plans for record number of international students

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The most recent data available on MSU’s international student population are from fall 2009. According to the Office of International Students and Scholars:

  • 5,056 international students attended MSU, an increase of 12 percent over the total from 2008.
  • It was the first year in MSU’s history that the international undergraduate students (2,636) outnumbered international graduate students (2,420 graduates).
  • 53 percent were male and 47 percent were female.
  • 38 percent of the international students came from China (1,934), 16 percent from Korea (810) and 8 percent from India (397).
  • While the number of Chinese students drastically increased, there was a sharp decline in the number of Korean students between the 2008-09 academic years.
  • The colleges of Business (1,382), Engineering (729), Natural Science (709), Agriculture and Natural Resources (499) and Social Science (462) enrolled the largest numbers of international students at MSU.
  • There were 1,019 visiting international faculty at MSU in the past year.

According to Open Doors 2009:

  • MSU had the 10th largest number of international student enrollment in the U.S.
  • MSU’s international community contributed an estimated $150 million to the local economy.
  • MSU led the nation in study abroad participation among public universities in the U.S., with 2,969 MSU students studying abroad.
