It's simply known to Spartans as the Rock.

Situated outside the Auditorium on the north bank of the Red Cedar, the campus landmark serves as a billboard for everything from campus events to student groups, memorials to movements. A symbol of the Spartan Spirit, the Rock represents the diverse experiences and interests of its students — an ever-changing snapshot of time sealed in layers of thick paint.

Now, a new book produced by the Spartan community will explore those layers of the Rock's history. Currently available for preorder, "The Rock: Layered in MSU Tradition" is expected to be released later this summer.

The book features a year's worth of photos taken of the landmark, while highlighting several core themes of MSU as they have been expressed through the Rock — including but not limited to diversity, activism and Spartan Spirit.

"The Rock: Layered in MSU Tradition" costs $35 and is available for preorder here.
