Scientists have long recognized the threat of antibiotic resistant pathogens, but only recently has the threat become broadly recognized to motivate action by leaders, not only in the government, but also the public.
Michigan State University will host the fourth international symposium on the Environmental Dimension of Antibiotic Resistance on Aug. 13-17 at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center.
“Many of the expanded global research programs that were started back in 2012 with the first EDAR meeting will be reaching the first stages of maturity in 2017, which will make this year’s meeting very timely for sharing research outcomes as well as identifying the next steps needed to protect public health.” said James Tiedje, University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences, and conference convener.
The symposium’s 15 keynote speakers from around the world will focus on the environmental issues concerning antibiotic fate and resistance. Since more that 90 percent of antibiotics used by humans and in animal and aquaculture enter the environment and the resistant microbes can enter our food water.
