Design Day featured innovations from Spartan engineers

The MSU College of Engineering hosted its fall Design Day on Dec. 9, giving 554 computer science and engineering students the opportunity to showcase the culmination of their work this semester.

Among these Spartan engineers, 272 seniors presented their final projects as part of their 15-week capstone courses. Each team was tasked with solving a real-world problem for a particular company. According to Leo Kempel, acting dean of the College of Engineering, 73 percent of the projects were sponsored by Michigan companies.

“We have an impact not just here in the region, but we have an impact through Design Day statewide and across the country,” Kempel said. “Students find that the experiences they learn in the capstone courses are really the first step into their careers as professional engineers.”

This year’s Design Day also hosted 175 high school students who participated in hands-on workshops and interacted with MSU students.
