Office for International Students and Scholars welcomes new director

International Studies and Programs at Michigan State University has named James Dorsett as the new director of the Office for International Students and Scholars, effective March 16.

In this role, Dorsett will provide leadership for one of the nation’s largest and most prominent offices serving international students, scholars and their families. MSU’s international enrollment exceeded 7,700 for the 2014-2015 academic year.

“James Dorsett is an accomplished and respected leader in the field of international education, and we look forward to him joining our team,” said Steven Hanson, associate provost and dean of international studies and programs. “His administrative experience, cultural competency and passion for campus internationalization will strengthen OISS as it continues to play a critical role here at MSU.”

Dorsett’s career in international education spans more than 20 years. He most recently directed the International Students and Scholars Office at Iowa State University, which serves more than 4,500 students and scholars. Dorsett led the office through a period of massive growth, with international enrollment increasing by 80 percent during his nine years at ISU. Prior to joining at ISU, Dorsett held leadership positions in international offices at Wayne State University, Indiana University Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.

A well-known figure in the field of international education, Dorsett is active with the National Association of International Educators. As part of his involvement with the association, he helped develop training curricula for new student and scholar advisors. In addition, Dorsett is currently past-chair for NAFSA’s Knowledge Community for International Student and Scholar Services. He received a Distinguished Service Award from NAFSA Region IV in 2013.

“MSU has a long and proud tradition in international education and I look forward to being part of that tradition,” Dorsett said. “I am excited about bringing my experience to MSU and helping OISS take our work with international students and scholars to a new level.”

Dorsett completed his bachelor’s degree at Baylor University and holds master’s degrees in Russian history and higher education administration, both from Indiana University-Bloomington.
