MSU Choral Union to hold auditions

The Michigan State University Choral Union will hold interviews/auditions for its spring 2015 season at 6 p.m. Jan. 14 and 21.

Auditions will take place on the MSU campus in Room 165 of the Communication Arts and Sciences Building. The first rehearsal also will be Jan. 14, so those auditioning should be prepared to stay for rehearsal that evening and on Jan. 21.

Auditionees should be prepared to vocalize and sing the first verse of "The Star Spangled Banner." Previous choral singing experience is desirable, but not required. No appointment is necessary but auditionees are asked to come at 6 p.m. for a general information session. Individual auditions will follow immediately.

David Rayl, director of choral programs at MSU, conducts the Choral Union. “It offers the opportunity to sing the greatest choral masterpieces of the past 300 years with a first-class orchestra on the stage of Wharton Center,” Rayl said. “It’s an unforgettable experience! Members of the Choral Union come with a wide variety of musical experiences and abilities. The unifying element is their common love of choral-orchestral singing.” The ensemble rehearses from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday evenings.

Members pay a $52 per semester registration fee and pay for their own musical scores. Spring 2015 repertoire is focused on music of Latin America: the first choral work published in the “New” World; a mass by colonial Cuban composer Gaieta Pagueras; Choros No. 10 by Heitor Villa Lobos; and a choral-orchestral ballet, Maracatu de Chico Rei, from the 1920s by Brazilian composer Francesco Mignone.
