Inaugural concert of Early Music Series features harpsichord

The MSU College of Music will kick off the first concert of the new Taylor Johnston Early Music Series at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 7 at the Music Building with a program of 17th-century harpsichord music.

Guest artist Edward Parmentier will take the stage performing on the college’s recently acquired harpsichord.

The instrument is modeled on 17th-century Flemish harpsichords and is suited to the repertoire Parmentier has chosen. The instrument will be tuned for Renaissance and early Baroque music. This authentic tuning will allow the music to sound as it did when it was first performed.

Taylor Johnston, the sponsor of the series, is in his 47th year on the faculty in the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences of the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. He combines his love of science with his passion for singing and playing early music on wind instruments, primarily the recorder.

Admission is free for students with ID and anyone under the age of 18. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (age 60 and older), and can be purchased online, at the College of Music box office, by calling 517-353-5340 or in person.
