Honoring a football legend

Michigan State University Archives and Historical Collections and the MSU Retirees Association will host a free public preview and discussion of the documentary “Through the Banks of the Red Cedar” on Sept. 10 at Conrad Hall, 888 Wilson Road. The open house will start at 6 p.m. followed by the program at 7 p.m.

In addition, archival materials will be on display.

Filmmaker Maya Washington, daughter of MSU football legend Gene Washington, will host the discussion with moderator Jack Ebling. In addition, Clinton Jones, one of Washington’s MSU football teammates, will attend.

“Through the Banks of the Red Cedar” follows the 50-year legacy of Washington, who later became a Vikings wide-receiver, from the segregated south to MSU, alongside teammates Bubba Smith, George Webster and Jones, as they become members of the first fully integrated football team in America, later making history as first-round picks in the 1967 draft.

The event celebrates the College Football Hall of Fame induction of Jones and the 50th Anniversary of the 1965 National Championship team. College Football Hall of Fame
