Debate Team invited to elite competition at Dartmouth

The Michigan State University Debate Team has been invited to compete in the Dartmouth Round Robin in January – a highly selective event for only the top seven teams in the country.

The Dartmouth Round Robin is one of the longest running round robins in college debate and has the most elite requirements of any tournament. In addition to MSU, the University of California-Berkeley, the University of Michigan, Harvard University, Emory University, the University of Kentucky and Wake Forest University will compete Jan. 23-24 in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Representing MSU will be Tyler Thur, an Honors College and international relations senior, and Margaret Strong, a mathematics senior. Strong and Thur are ranked third in the country.

This is the second appearance at the Dartmouth Round Robin for Strong and Thur, one of two teams with back-to-back invitations to the round robin.

The season’s debate topic is United States military presence abroad.

“Marge and Tyler have worked day-in and day-out to be ranked No. 3 in the country and represent MSU at this level,” said Head Coach Will Repko. “As a coach, that’s all you can ask for.”

The MSU Debate Team is a part of the Honors College.
