Debate team finishes in top eight at Vanderbilt tourney

Two pairings from the Michigan State University debate team made it into the elimination rounds at a recent Vanderbilt University tournament.

Professional writing sophomore Breana Brill and her teammate, economics and political science sophomore Wayne Campbell, finished in the top eight. Political science junior Darcell Brown and his teammate, Honors College physics freshman Evan Runburg, finished in the top 16.

Twenty-six teams competed in the tournament, including pairs from the University of Michigan and Wayne State University.

Two other pairs from MSU also competed in the tournament: Honors College international relations and economics freshman Jake Wier and his teammate, political science freshman Travis McClendon; and comparative cultures and politics sophomore Briana Lewis and her teammate, physics freshman Daniel Oleynik.

“The Vanderbilt tournament was a great opportunity for our team to compete in a smaller, yet competitive, setting,” said Coach Will Repko. “I’d like to congratulate Breana, Wayne, Darcell and Evan for advancing to the elimination rounds in the Vanderbilt tournament.”

The MSU Debate Team, part of the Honors College, will compete at its next tournament at Harvard University on Oct. 31.
