Six MSU education scholars on list of most influential

A half-dozen Michigan State University faculty members are among the most influential education scholars in the nation, according to an Education Week ranking.

Rick Hess, a blogger with the publication, each year compiles the Edu-Scholar Public Presence Rankings, a listing of scholars known for making significant contributions to national debates in education.

This year’s ranking of the top 200 education scholars includes:

  • University Distinguished Professor William Schmidt at 58
  • College of Education Dean Donald Heller at 66
  • Hannah Distinguished Professor Barbara Schneider at 107
  • Gary Sykes, professor emeritus of teacher education at 118
  • Rebecca Jacobsen, assistant professor of teacher education at 168
  • Sarah Reckhow, assistant professor of political science at 190

Hess says the rankings offer “a useful, if imperfect, gauge of the public influence edu-scholars had in 2013. The rubric reflects both a scholar’s body of academic work—encompassing the breadth and influence of their scholarship—and their footprint on the public discourse last year.”

Several former MSU College of Education faculty members also are on the Public Presence list, such as Richard Elmore, Yong Zhao, David Cohen, Andrew Porter, Deborah Ball and David Labaree.
