MSU’s renovated Butterfield and Landon Halls now open

MSU unveiled its most recently renovated residence halls, Landon and Butterfield, on Aug. 16.

Both halls closed for renovation in May 2013 to receive infrastructure and design updates. With the reopening of Landon and Butterfield, this fall will mark the first time in several years that all 27 residence halls at MSU will be open for occupation.

Wireless internet access has been expanded to include student rooms throughout both Landon and Butterfield halls and kitchenettes have been added to each floor in the living wings. Community bathrooms, carpet, lighting, paint, heating and vents, windows, blinds and furnishings have all been updated in the halls.

Butterfield Hall, first opened in 1953, is the final hall renovation to be completed in Brody Neighborhood. The hall’s design is Michigan-themed, featuring artwork highlighting points of interest throughout Michigan. Additional upgrades throughout the building include a Spartan helmet logo designed in the floor of the first floor lounge and a meditation room, complete with glass tiles, seating and a foot sink.

“The Butterfield renovation completes the Brody Neighborhood,” said Kathy Collins, director of Residence Education and Housing Services at MSU. “Butterfield is an exceptional renovation and includes many things students have been asking for, including more group study space.”

Landon Hall, built in 1947, has received upgrades and added features in both the residential living wings and the dining hall. A popular choice for music majors and students trained in the arts, Landon Hall now has four private, soundproof music practice rooms, with a grand piano available for student use in each. Additional study and gathering space has been added in the residential living wings. The building is now accessible with the installation of elevators and sprinklers to bring the building up to code with fire safety.

“Landon is beautiful, and the renovation of the dining facility has created yet another wonderful place for Spartans to gather on campus,” said Collins.

The new Heritage Commons dining hall also will open in Landon Hall on Aug. 23. Heritage Commons at Landon features four specialty concept restaurants: Grains and Greens, Global Flavors, Landon Bistro and Sizzle. The dining hall now seats 350 guests across three easily accessible levels, each rich with its own unique yet classical design.

Akers Hall is the next residence hall and dining facility to be updated, with the completion date set for January 2015.
