MSU Office of Campus Sustainability newsletter

This month, the Office of Campus Sustainability newsletter is recognizing the many sustainable spaces on campus. The U.S. Green Building Council's rating system, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, awards gold, silver or bronze certification to buildings that demonstrate remarkable environmentally-conscious design, construction and operation. MSU owns 1,451,627 square feet of LEED-certified space.

November events

There are a slew of events occurring this month including some great workshops. Learn about the paper cycle from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 4, or attend the Adult Vermicomposting class on from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 12.

Green Certification

Green Certification has a new program launching in November. This year, the process has been improved. Levels of bronze, silver and green will be awarded to unit building spaces such as offices, labs, kitchens and etc. based on environmental competency. The Green Certification program has been vital in recognizing, promoting and assisting units that are taking steps toward reducing their environmental footprint.

Annual Sustainability Report

The 2014 Sustainability Report is now live. This year's report breaks down the top sustainability-related issues including energy, waste reduction, water, transportation and engagement. The report comprehensively overviews these issues at MSU and then details how they will be handled in the future.

Don’t be victimized by phising

Recently, hackers have been sending out emails under the name “MSU Sustainability” regarding “signing up for our newsletter.” These emails are a scam. MSU Sustainability will never directly send communications regarding newsletter subscription. If you are already subscribed to our newsletter, you will receive a monthly HTML email from begreen@msu.edu. While we are working closely with MSU IT to remedy this issue, please be wary of other suspicious communications.

Energy educators: Sustainable buildings at MSU

Probably the most recognized name in green building standards today is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED is a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of green buildings. It was started in 1993 by the United States Green Building Council. The USGBC¹s Mission is “to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.”
