MSU debate team finishes in top four of Harvard tournament

The MSU debate team finished in the final four of the Harvard University tournament this week.

International relations junior Tyler Thur and his partner, math junior Margaret Strong, made it to the semifinals after beating teams from Oklahoma University and the University of California-Berkeley. They lost to Northwestern University in the semifinals.

The team of international relations senior Jack Caporal and international relations senior Quinn Zemel made it to the sweet 16, but lost to the University of California-Berkeley.

Also competing for MSU was the team of political science and pre-law freshman Sean Lavelle and computer science sophomore Connor Munsinger.

In all, 84 teams competed in the Harvard tournament.

“Our team made a compelling run at the Harvard tournament,” said head coach Will Repko. “Tyler and Marge not only made it to the final four, but also earned individual speaker awards from the judges. We are definitely picking up momentum as the season continues.”

Thur placed third in the individual speaker award category and Strong placed sixth.

The next tournament the team will compete in will be held at Butler University Nov. 7-9.
