MSU Debate hosts Spartan Debate Institute

Beginning Sunday, the Michigan State University debate program will host the 22nd annual Spartan Debate Institute for more than 230 students looking to hone their debate skills.

The institute runs a two-week, three-week and four-week program for students from Michigan and across the country.

Michigan schools registered for the event include: East Lansing High School, Detroit Country Day School, Portage Northern High School, Traverse City Central High School, Seaholm High School, West Bloomfield High School and Wylie E. Groves High School.

Students from 23 other states are also participating in this year’s institute.

“The Spartan Debate Institute gives students who are passionate about debate a leg-up heading into the competitive season,” said Carly Watson, MSU Debate project/event coordinator. “Students are taught by some of the best debate faculty in the country, have tons of resources at their fingertips, and of course, lots of opportunities to participate in real debates.”

Past institute participants have gone on to win tournaments or top speaker awards at the high school level, as well in intercollegiate debate.

MSU Debate is run through the MSU Honors College.
