Shannon Burton, MSU assistant ombudsperson, is one of just 10 individuals to be selected internationally to serve as a mentor for the 2014-2016 Class of Emerging Leaders for NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising.
“I am excited to be selected as a mentor in the Emerging Leaders Program,” Burton said. “I have had the good fortune over the years of having mentors that allowed me to grow professionally in leadership, research, and assessment skills, and I hope that I will 'pay it forward’ in the same vein. Being part of this program allows me to build on these experiences and helps to strengthen the NACADA leadership. I want to support others in being authentic and courageous in their work and promote the importance of academic advising as integral to student success.”
The purpose of the Emerging Leaders Program is to provide an intentional and focused mentoring experience to those who are interested in becoming more involved with the association. Burton was chosen because of her interest in the program as well as her involvement in, and commitment to, the association.
The Emerging Leaders Program is a two-year program in which Burton will work closely with an NACADA Emerging Leader to help him or her gain the skills, experiences, and knowledge needed to move into a leadership position in the association. The two will develop a plan for the Emerging Leader’s involvement, which will be based upon his or her interests, expertise, and goals for the future.
NACADA promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students. NACADA provides a forum for discussion, debate, and the exchange of ideas pertaining to academic advising through numerous activities and publications. NACADA also serves as an advocate for effective academic advising by providing a consulting and speaker service and funding for research related to academic advising.
