Michigan 4-H alumnus and former state leader to be inducted into National 4-H Hall of Fame

The National 4-H Hall of Fame will recognize Michael Tate for his excellence in citizenship, leadership, character and career accomplishments as a result of his involvement in Michigan 4-H and 4-H across the country.

Tate and 14 other individuals will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during an Oct. 10 ceremony at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, MD.

“I am proud to have someone like Michael Tate, who was so pivotal to Michigan 4-H, join the National 4-H Hall of Fame,” said Julie Chapin, MSU Extension Children and Youth Institute director. “He did so much for 4-H in our state during his years with MSU Extension and continues to impact 4-H across the county in his current role. The achievements he has had and continues to have are exactly what this program prides itself on.”

Since 2010, Tate has served as the chief diversity officer and professor of Human Development for Washington State University. Previous roles at WSU include serving as the director and dean of WSU Cooperative Extension. Prior to supporting Extension programs in Washington, Tate was an instrumental leader for MSU Extension programs, serving as the Michigan 4-H state director from 1983 to 1993 and then as MSU Extension assistant director from 1993 to 1998.

Tate and other inductees for the National 4-H Hall of Fame were each selected because of his or her significant contribution to 4-H, the nation’s premier youth development organization and the largest in Michigan.

“We are proud to honor and recognize the outstanding individuals in the class of 2014 for the National 4-H Hall of Fame,” said Jeannette Rea Keywood, chair of the National 4-H Hall of Fame. “These individuals have touched the lives of many people, from 4-H staff members and colleagues to thousands of 4-H volunteers and members throughout the nation. The honorees will be presented with a National 4-H Hall of Fame medallion, plaque and memory book during the ceremony.”
