Event to dedicate MSU's Chittenden Hall

This Friday Michigan State University will celebrate the renovation of one its more historic buildings – Chittenden Hall.

The grand opening program is at 3:30 p.m. in the atrium of the Justin S. Morrill Hall of Agriculture. A ribbon cutting will be at 4 p.m. at Chittenden Hall, which is located along what was once known as Laboratory Row on West Circle Drive.

Among the dignitaries on hand will be MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon, Provost June Pierce Youatt and Dianne Byrum, a member of the MSU Board of Trustees.

The occasion also will mark the 20th anniversary of the MSU Graduate School, which has taken up residence in the newly renovated facility.

Chittenden Hall was originally constructed in 1901 and was home to the dairy plant of what was then known as the State Agricultural College. Since then, the building has been home to a number of programs, including the Department of Forestry.

The building is named in honor of Alfred K. Chittenden, who directed the university’s forestry programs from 1914 to 1930.

As home to the MSU Graduate School, Chittenden Hall will provide renovated office space, workshop space, conference rooms and a student lounge. The Council of Graduate Students also will be housed in the facility.
