MSU SAID to host fourth annual Indian Gala fundraiser

MSU Students Advancing International Development will host its fourth annual Indian Gala fundraiser from 7 to 9 p.m. April 19 at the Hannah Community Center in East Lansing.

MSU SAID will donate all proceeds to the Shanti Ashram Akkam Scholarship Fund for Girls, which provides scholarship loans for young women in rural villages in India to attend high school or college for one year.

MSU SAID’s goal for 2013 is to raise $6,500 to sponsor 20 girls from 10 villages. The scholarship fund is revolving, which means that, as loan recipients pay back their debts, the money goes back into the fund to benefit other girls.

The gala will include a silent auction with some items donated by local businesses and others imported from India, an Indian dinner and traditional Indian music performed on the veena, a stringed instrument similar to the sitar. Tickets to the gala are $10 in advance and $15 at the door for students and $25 in advance and $30 at the door for the public. Tickets may be purchased online.
