Special education sophomore wins Big Ten Network scholarship

Julia Ruggirello, a sophomore majoring in special education, has received a 2012 Big Ten Network LiveBig Scholarship for Outstanding Service.

She is president of Community Action and Response Experience at MSU, through which she works to unify Lansing and East Lansing. Ruggirello currently volunteers at the East Allen Neighborhood Center, helping kids garden and foster healthy habits.

BTN received more than 80,000 essays for its LiveBig contest. It selected a winner from each of the 12 schools from within the Big Ten.

Rankings were based on stadium sustainability efforts, number of active green organizations, waste diversion rate, percentage of budget spent on locally grown or organic foods and level of environmental studies degrees offered.
