Staff profiles: Brad Walker

Brad Walker came to WKAR three years ago and is the producer of Radio Reading Service, a 24-hour radio station that serves more than 1,000 mid-Michigan people who have difficulty reading printed material.

This month, WKAR celebrated its 37th year offering the service to the public. It was one of the first stations in the country to begin reading to those who need it.

Walker graduated from MSU with a telecommunications degree, and has been in broadcasting ever since.

“The best part of my job is helping blind and visually impaired persons, telling them the news and what’s on sale, reading them books and that kind of thing. That’s very important to me,” Walker said. “I’m doing something I’ve done before and now it has more of a purpose in my life.”

News, novels, books and other helpful information is shared on the station for listeners who use the special radio that allows them to utilize the service.

Volunteers are the voices for WKAR’s Radio Reading Service, and after an audition, anyone interested in reading aloud can help WKAR.

“We have a fantastic support group with volunteers. They are just amazing people,” Walker said. “They have such a great time reading to the blind and visually impaired persons of Michigan.”
