Staff profiles: Marge Barkman

There is no greater enjoyment for Marge Barkman than helping students achieve their academic goals and realize their dreams.

In her 24 years as coordinator for academic programs for the College of Communications Arts and Sciences, Barkman has guided a multitude of students.

“It gives me the opportunity to work with people at all levels, from the moment parents walk through the door with their students, their children to the Ph.D.s,” Barkman said.

“I enjoy the variety. There’s never a dull day. There’s always something new. I enjoy the opportunity to think of new ways to help people in their pursuit of their degrees.”

Besides helping students plan their academic futures, she also helps with the department’s Web page.

“Students will first take the opportunity to look at a Web page before they will pick up a phone or walk in an office,” Barkman said. “I’ve discovered that rather than making brochures or paper handouts, the image that you want people to see is found on your Web site.”
