Spartans stretched to five in win over Rutgers 3-2

Michigan State took an early lead and then had to fend off a spirited Rutgers team to claim a 3-2 victory on the road on Wednesday night. MSU improves to 17-13, 5-12 Big Ten and Rutgers falls to 6-24, 0-17.

After a tight opening set that went in favor of the Spartans in extra points, the Green and White rode a .636 second-set hitting percentage to a 25-14 victory in the second to take a 2-0 match lead. In the third, Rutgers led by as many as six points and got to set point at 24-19, but MSU fended off four set points before falling, 23-25 as the home team forced a fourth set.
