MSU Debate qualifies two teams for national championship

Michigan State University Debate will have two pairs of teams debating in the National Debate Tournament – marking the 21st consecutive season that MSU has qualified at least one team to the tournament.

Representing MSU will be James Madison freshman Lena Grossman and her teammate, accounting sophomore Christian Rodriguez, as well as Honors College physics sophomore Evan Runburg and his teammate, social relations and public policy sophomore Luc Walkington. The students qualified for the national tournament after competing in a district competition held at MSU over the weekend.

Seventy-eight teams will compete at the 71st annual National Debate Tournament, which will be held at the University of Kansas in Kansas City March 23-27.

“This year’s set of MSU qualifiers is especially young – three sophomores and a freshman,” said Debate Head Coach Will Repko. “These students have worked hard throughout the season and I’m looking forward to seeing how they compete at the national tournament.”

The MSU debate team is part of the Honors College.
