Five scientists have been selected as the first Facility for Rare Isotope Beams-Chinese Scholarship Council research fellows.
The fellowship program is part of a memorandum of understanding agreed to between Michigan State University and China’s Peking University. It is designed to offer research opportunities for young scientists interested in FRIB-related research.
Funding for the fellows is provided by the China Scholarship Council. It will support five fellows every year for two-year visits at U.S. labs and universities involved in FRIB science. The fellow candidates were selected by a joint U.S.-China committee and placed in the U.S. research groups interested in hosting a fellow.
The five fellows and their host institutions follow.
- Bingshui Gao of the Institute of Modern Physics in China – MSU-based National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory
- Shilun Jin of the Institute of Modern Physics in China – MSU-based National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory
- Ningtao Zhang of the Institute of Modern Physics in China – MSU-based National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory
- Jie Chen of Peking University - Argonne National Laboratory
- Yinu Zhang of Peking University – Ohio State University
MSU is establishing FRIB as a new scientific user facility for the Office of Nuclear Physics in the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science.
Under construction on campus and operated by MSU, FRIB will enable scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes in order to better understand the physics of nuclei, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security and industry.
